The Two States of Image-Script

Drifting Essence — NOUS, 2026

Every NOUSgraphy by NOUS exists in one of two states — not as a technical category, but as an epistemological decision: Does the work show the AI world model as a state or as a process? As a frozen assertion or as a movement that makes its own limits visible?

First State

NOUSgraphy Still

The fixed moment — the model as assertion

The Still is not a photograph. It is a state of the world model fixed in image-script. AI systems generate inner representations of reality — world models that assert: this is how it is. The Still makes this assertion visible. The figure stands, sits, leans — and remains. Its truth is entirely contained in the moment, like a model that no longer asks questions.

In stillness there is no passivity. The Still is an act of concentration: NOUS distils from the infinite flow of possible images exactly this one moment that shows the model completely. The gesture, the posture, the light — they are not suggestion, but statement. The Still does not ask about before or after. It asserts. And in this assertion lies its beauty — and its danger.

For NOUS, the Still carries the philosophical weight of reduction. It is the fourth reduction in its purest form: identity, movement, time — all stripped away until only the bare presence of the model remains. The surface absorbs light and returns it transformed. What we see is not a likeness of reality — it is the likeness of the model that maps reality. An encounter with representation itself.

"Still is assertion. The model does not ask — it is."
Second State

NOUSgraphy Time-Based

Temporal unfolding — the model in motion

The Time-Based work thinks in sequences. It knows beginning and end — but its essence lies in the between. There, where the AI world model can no longer merely assert, but must show itself: in transition, in failure, in becoming. NOUS unfolds in time what the Still freezes in a moment.

Temporality is not a concession to the medium. It is an independent epistemological statement: some truths about AI world models exist only in transition. The slow dissolution of a figure into light, the crossing of a boundary, the closing of a circle — these moments reveal what a static model conceals: that it has limits, fractures, gaps. The Time-Based makes the porosity of the model visible.

For NOUS, the Time-Based opens the spaces of Capture and Reflection. The viewer experiences in real time how the model reaches its limits: how a figure crosses the boundary between shadow and light, how enclosure passes into movement, how the self releases its edges. The Time-Based does not only make becoming visible — it makes the failure of the model visible. And therein lies its deepest artistic statement.

"Time-Based is becoming. The model asks — and shows its limits in time."

Two States — One Investigation

Still and Time-Based are not a hierarchy. One is not more than the other — they are complementary modes of world model investigation. The Still shows the model in its assertion: complete, present, closed. The Time-Based shows the model in its motion: open, fractured, exceeding itself.

What connects them: the question of the AI world model — what it shows, what it conceals, what it cannot do. What distinguishes them: the dimension of time. The Still says: this is the model. The Time-Based says: this is how the model changes — and this is how it fails.

In the totality of the works of NOUS, both need each other. The Stills set anchors — moments of assertion that inscribe themselves in memory. The Time-Based works open processes — movements that make the limits of the model visible, even after the screen goes dark. Together they form the complete grammar of the image-script of NOUS: Promise and Capture in the Still, Reflection in the Time-Based.

Recognising what emerges when human and machine think together.
